To celebrate a belated mother’s day, we decided to have dinner at Origin North located at Bayview village. It is nice to have an option for some good quality food outside of the downtown core. Claudio Aprile is the chef behind Origin North and you can see him as a judge on Master Chef Canada.
We started with two appetizers: Crispy Calamari and the Sweet Potato & Kale Salad. The crispy calamari was paired with caramelized peanut, pineapple, mango, and shredded vegetables. The contrast between the calamari and the sweet pineapple, mango and caramelized peanuts made the appetizer to die for.
The sweet potato and kale salad was delicious and was packed full of textures. The soft sweet potato went nicely with the crunch of the apples and pumpkin seeds. This appetizer was a nice way to get the meal started.
For mains we ordered fettuccine, Thai curried shrimp, loaded burger, and the roast salmon. After sampling everything, I noticed that Origin does a great job making dressing and sauces. The simplicity of the meal added with their great sauces really makes the meals memorable.
The fettuccine had scallops, shrimps, mussels and was topped off with a beautiful saffron tomato sauce.
The curried shrimp was swimming a lovely curry sauce with chickpeas and tomatoes. It was served with a side of warm naan.
The loaded burger was a good old fashion burger with high quality ingredients. The loaded burger was topped with mushrooms, caramelized onions, horseradish mayo and aged cheddar. The side of fries were very tasty and fresh as well.
My personal favourite dish was the roast salmon in coconut broth. It was garnished with sweet potato and an Asian coleslaw. I enjoyed this entree the most since the flavour of the coconut broth accompanied the delicately cooked salmon so well. The presentation was outstanding as well!
The portions were just the right size to save room for the delicious dessert to come.
The highlight of the evening had to go to the very creative (both in taste and presentation) of the PB & J cone with soft serve ice cream, berry compote and peanut brittle. The peanut butter tasted so fresh and complimented the soft serve ice cream very nicely. It was presented with the cone upside down and the peanut butter was spread around the bowl. I would highly recommend you save room for this dessert.
We also ordered the Dulce de leche that had a piece of lemon cake topped with yogurt and frozen raspberry. The flavours blended nicely and the texture of the frozen raspberry gave the dessert a much needed crunch.
The Chocolate Pot de Creme was light and had just the right amount of sweetness and topped with a nice toffee crunch.
Origin North served up simple, delicate food that was elevated with flavours that really popped in your mouth. The food and ambiance of the restaurant were fantastic. I would definitely visit Origin North again!
Great flavours added to simple ingredients!
