Cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes!
I have always been a fan of Heather and Lori’s show – Cupcake Girls. They have many locations in Vancouver and have opened up one in Toronto recently. The Toronto store is located in the East side of Toronto in Leaside. I can see the cute pink cupcake sign as I approach. Once I entered the store, the smell of freshly baked good wafted my nose and my mouth began to water.
The owner, Jodi Thompson greeted me warmly at the door and began showing me around the shop. The decor was retro and whimsical with splashes of pink throughout. As you enter, the beautiful cupcake display showcased the shop’s 18 different cupcake flavours. Their 12 classic flavours include: Sweet 16, Blue Hawaii, Lemon Drop, Mint Condition, Chocolate, Koo Koo, Diva, Red Velvet, and Caramella. The other 6 flavours are changed at the beginning of each month. For the month of January, the featured cupcakes include: Cosmopolitan, Pecan Brownie, Pretzel, Monkey Business, Tiramisu, and Cookies & Cream. The store sell merchandise like chef hats, and aprons with cute cupcakes printed on them along with mini cupcakes, regular cakes, and ice cream in the future.
Jodi showed me to the decorating area in her immaculate kitchen and we began decorating a chocolate cupcake into a caramella cupcake. The chocolate cupcake is filled with caramel and topped with a caramel butter cream. All the cupcakes, butter cream, and cream cheese frosting are all made from scratch with no shortening and real butter. The taste really stands out and the shop takes great pride in keeping their products fresh and clean: they even throw out their pipping bags daily to maintain the high quality.
Jodi showed me how to pipe the icing and she made it look so much easier than it really is! I tried but it did not look nearly as nice.
Throughout my visit, Jodi received many calls for orders and inquiries about getting cupcakes and cakes. They cater to everything from birthdays, weddings, baby showers, and many more. If you like to place a special order, you can simply call the store a couple of days in advance. Cupcakes does many seasonal cupcakes for different holidays throughout the year. During this past holiday season, Cupcakes created Christmas cupcake wreaths.
I took home a mini cupcake pack which included all the 12 classic flavours. Even though they were the mini version, they were beautifully decorated like the bigger version and tasted phenomenal. The actual cupcakes were soft and fluffy and just melted in your mouth. Out of all the cake base, I liked the coconut cake featured in the Koo Koo and Blue Hawaii cupcakes the best. For the frosting, my favourite was the cream cheese frosting on the red velvet. The mini variety pack is great to try out all the classic flavours to see which one you like the best so you know what to order on your next visit to Cupcakes.
I really enjoyed my visit to Cupcakes in Leaside. The atmosphere was fun, relaxing and the cupcakes were beautiful and decadent. Hopefully Heather and Lori will open more locations throughout Ontario so more people are able to taste their high quality cupcakes.
Thank you Jodi for showing me around, it was a blast!
